1968 Gibson J-50
This 1968 Gibson J-50 is in very good condition. This instrument shows signs of play wear and age throughout (see photos). There are two top cracks on the treble side that have just been repaired by Glaser Instruments in Nashville, Tennessee. Both crack repairs are very solid. This instrument has two pickguards installed. There is no footprint from any other pickguard so I believe that these were cut and installed on the guitar very early in its life. An old DeArmond soundhole pickup has been installed and the pickguards are cut around the mounting feet of the pickup so I believe the pickguards and pickup were installed at the same time. The work is very professionally done. I believe that this guitar was once set up left-handed because there are two output jacks installed, one on each side of the body. Both are still connected and both are operational! This instrument has had a new bone nut made for it and professionally installed. The neck is straight and the neck angle is optimal. The top is flat and the bridge is flat against the body. This J-50 has a thin but rounded neck profile that is on the small side and has a 1 9/16” nut width. This neck is very comfortable and the guitar is very easy to play with low smooth action and great intonation. The original fret wire is in great shape and has lots of life left. This guitar has just been professionally set up at Glaser Instruments and is ready to play! This guitar sounds fantastic and has a very dry thumpy old Gibson tone with plenty of volume. This guitar is quite lively as well in comparison to some other vintage Gibson flat tops. Plugged in, this J-50 sounds incredible! The DeArmond pickup delivers some seriously great tones and has a very “Lightnin' Hopkins” vibe - Perfect for old fingerstyle blues. This J-50 is housed in an old but non-original case for safe travels. If you are after an incredibly cool great sounding and playing vintage Gibson flat top for live performance or to use as a songwriting companion, this 1968 J-50 is a fantastic choice.
