1955 Gibson SJ Southern Jumbo

Excellent condition featuring slope shoulder dreadnought size body, solid Sitka spruce top with sunburst finish and decorative soundhole rosette, multiple bindings on the top body edges, solid mahogany back and sides with dark stain finish and multiple bindings on the edges, small tortoiseshell grain pickguard, Brazilian rosewood belly bridge, mahogany neck, bound Brazilian rosewood fingerboard with split parallelogram inlays starting at the first fret, bone nut, Gibson open book peghead, black peghead face with pearl Gibson logo and crown inlays, single ply bell shape truss rod cover, three per side Kluson no line tuning machines with white plastic buttons, two strap buttons, and original brown hard shell case.

This 1955 Gibson Southern Jumbo is in excellent cosmetic condition and set up in perfect playing order. The neck angle is optimal and the fretboard has been professionally refretted. A new bone nut and new compensated bone saddle have been made for this guitar. The bridge has been re-glued. A strap button has been added to the neck heel. The white plastic oval tuning buttons have been replaced (the original buttons are in the case pocket). This SJ has one old repaired crack on the bass side back of the body (see photos). The repair is solid and well done. There is one small area that appears to have been repaired on the bottom bass side (see photos). These repairs do not affect the sound or playability of this instrument and the repair work was very professionally done. This instrument shows moderate to heavy lacquer checking throughout and some signs of play wear throughout. Lacquer checking is very common on an instrument of this age. This Gibson flat top sounds superb and has the dry articulate tone that these instruments are famous for. This SJ would record extremely well and sit perfectly in a mix. It's an absolutely fantastic guitar. If you're looking for a flat top guitar that needs nothing, sounds out of this world and will continue to gain collectability and value, this old box just might be the ticket.
